Which Makeup Primer Should You Use?

Makeup primers work as a base for your foundation, giving you longer lasting perfect skin. Makeup primers are an absolute godsend when trying to control excess shine and achieving a smoother complexion. Basically, if you haven’t been using a makeup primer, then you’re missing out!

Apply makeup primer to dry, clean skin before applying makeup. There are also many primers than can be used before and after makeup application to help control shine – perfect for those with oily skin.

Makeup primers come in various formulations and finishes, however the most common are powdered primers, cream primers, pressed primers and gel liquid primers. Whether you wear a full face of makeup each day, or keep it simple with a tinted BB cream and lip balm, a primer is your new best friend!

But, which makeup primer should you be using?

Liquid Gel Primers

Perfect for all skin types. Those with dry or mature skin will benefit from a liquid primer most. Youngblood Cosmetics have a gorgeous Mineral Primer that is rich in vitamins A and E with Jojoba Seed Oil for maximum hydration.  Jane Iredale’s Smooth Affair is a best-seller and is available in a primer for both normal skin and oily skin types. Both primers are packed with vitamins and antioxidants to assist in re-hydrating the skin, prolonging the life of your makeup and perfecting your pores.

Pressed & Powder Primers

These primers are ideal for those with oily and combination skin types. Youngblood’s Rice Setting Powder (available loose or pressed) helps in achieving a matte finish. They are non-drying, which helps absorb excess oil and minimize the appearance of pores. You can even use these primers on top of lipstick to give a matte finish!

Oil Control Primers

Ideal for those with oily skin, or those with normal skin and an oily t-zone. Weightless and transparent, these pressed primers use unique formulas that both hydrate and absorb excess oil to reduce shine. Youngblood’s Anti-Shine Mattifier provides a long lasting matte-effect and can be used both before the application of your foundation and as a touch up throughout the day. Jane Iredale’s Absence Oil Control Primer works in a similar way with hydrated silica that absorbs excess oil without affecting the moisture of the skin.
